HOLIDAY TIPSFROMTHE PARK RIDGE FIREDEPARTMENT
For most of us, the kitchen is the heart of the home, especially during the holidays. From testing family recipes to decorating cakes and cookies, everyone enjoys being part of the preparations. Keeping fire safety in mind in the kitchen during this joyous but hectic time is important, especially when there’ s a lot of activity and people at home. As you start preparing your holiday schedule and organizing that large family feast, remember, by following a few simple safety tips you can enjoy time with your loved ones and keep yourself and your family safe from fire.
THANKSGIVING BY THE NUMBERS
• In 2013, Thanksgiving Day was the leading date for home cooking fires with 1,550, 230 % above the average number of fires per day.
• Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day and Christmas Eve.
• Unattended cooking was by far the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths.
• Cooking equipment is the leading cause of home structure fires and associated civilian injuries and was the third leading cause of home fire deaths.
SAFETY TIPS
• Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop soyou can keep an eye on the food.
• Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently.
• Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay three feet away.
• Make sure children stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.
• Keep the floor clear so you don’ ttrip over children, toys, pocketbooks or bags.
• Keep knives out of the reach of children.
• Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.
• Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children, preferably up high in a locked cabinet.
• Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle.
• Make sure your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are working. Check them by pushing the test button.
IMPORTANT REMINDER FORRESIDENTS WITH FIRE HYDRANTSONTHEIRPROPERTY

Specifically, Section 86-5 Obstruction of Fire Hydrants requires owners, tenants or occupants of lands abutting any fire hydrant to maintain the area within a five-foot perimeter of the center of the hydrant free of all ice and snow. Afine of $ 75 will becharged for failure to complete the removal of ice and snow within 24 hours after the final accumulation of snow or ice has ceased.
Section 86-6 Waiver of Obligation to Remove Snow and Ice provides that a senior or disabled citizen may apply to the Borough Administrator for a waiver from the obligation and not be charged a fine. The Borough Administrator will maintain a list of individuals who have requested a waiver. For more information, please see the Borough Code available on our website, www. parkridgeboro. com
DO SMOKE AND CO DETECTORS GIVE YOUPEACE OF MINDATHOME? THEYMAY BE EXPIRED!
Everyone knows that the batteries in your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide( CO) detectors should be changed; however, did youknow that these detectors must bereplaced when they are past their expiration dates?
Smoke detectors have auseful life span ofabout 10 years. Past this time they may either setoff afalse alarm or simply not activate when they should. The back of the detector will list either amanufacture date or an expiration date for reference.
CO detectors have an expiration of five toseven years. Thosemanufactured after August 2009 are required to have an“ end of life” signal to alert you to their expiration. The instructions that indicate how the CO detector will sound when expired are listed onthe back of the detector along with their manufacture orexpiration date.
In New Jersey, every new home and every new occupancy ofa home or apartment requires verification that aworking smoke and CO detector is present. Check the replacement date onyour detectors now to verify that their life span has not expired. Avoid false alarms and restore your confidence inthe safety they provide. Remember most fire fatalities indwellings are from smoke inhalation. Carbon monoxide is also deadly and cannot bedetected without an operational alarm.

We hope everyone had achance to see the new painting added to the kiddie pool.( Thank you Laura Beer!)
Congratulations to our Swim and Dive Teams! Both teams took third place in dual meets and second place in League championships. Several swimmers and all divers took home trophies at the Bergen County Championships.
We look forward to next summer with NO rate increase and possibly a new“ non-resident” senior category. Montvale residents should register under non-resident rates. Park Ridge residents, please watch for registration mailings in mid to late April as well as updated information on the Borough website. Non-residents may pick up their registration packets beginning May 1, 2017 at Borough Hall as well as weekends in May at the pool between the hours of 12 PM-3PM. See you then!

Since the Borough is currently involved in litigation with multiple parties at the Superior Court, we cannot provide additional details that might impair our position and possibly negatively impact the Borough. At the State level, the NJSupreme Court is set to hear arguments regarding a previous ruling that eliminated the need to meet housing obligations that accrued over the past 15 years( Gap Period) while COAH was, according to the Courts, not functioning. The Borough is fully engaged in these proceedings, we have retained expert counsel and are taking deliberate steps to represent the best interests of our residents.
HAPPYHOLIDAYS!
As we approach Thanksgiving and year-end celebrations, we wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday season. We look forward to continuing the progress and continuing to communicate with you on Borough issues and events.
