Library hosts fundraiser Reach and Teach program
marks 30 years of making a

the Englewood Public Library.
The library is hoping to
build a modern addition to increase the capabilities of the library and be
sustainable for future decades. There is a wonderful opportunity for major
funding through NJ State’s Library Construction Bond Act matching grant
program for which the City has earmarked $2.5 million in capital funding.
Plans for the addition feature a 2-story cube which will complement the
existing circular building and provide flexible space for events, programs
and library materials.
Among the Englewood dignitaries honored during the evening were
Mayor Michael Wildes; Arnold Brown, Civil Rights Leader and Former N.J.
State Assemblyman; Calvin Hill, Jazz Musician & Organizer of Jazz Under
the Stars; and Ella Urdang, President of the Friends of the Englewood Public
Library. The event was sponsored by the Library Board and Friends of the
Library and featured Kosher sushi and salads, hors d’oeuvres, wine and a live
jazz performance by the Calvin Hill Group. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Reach and Teach
program. The program, primarily funded by Englewood Health
(formerly Englewood Hospital and Medical Center), strives to educate
middle school students about health-related topics such as substance
abuse, sexually transmitted diseases and the importance of healthy
eating and being active. This year brought significant change to the
Reach and Teach curriculum. Presentations and activities heavily
focused on nutrition, vaping and mental health to reflect the pressing
issues affecting today’s youth.
Youth education does not end with the close of the school year.
The Reach and Teach Program is unique because it uses non-traditional
settings to educate and empower youth to make healthy life choices.
The Youth Health Educator works with Englewood’s young population
throughout the summer at local camps and tutoring programs and
uses a hands-on approach to teach kids how to grow their own fruits
and vegetables in Englewood’s community garden as a way to foster
healthy eating habits.
2019 is a milestone year for the Reach and Teach program. During
August’s City Council meeting, Englewood Board of Health President
Dr. Aliza Solomon, presented Jamie Ketas, VP of Quality at Englewood
Health, a plaque thanking the hospital for 30 years of support.
The Englewood Health Department looks forward to continuing its
partnership with Englewood Health as they work together to educate
and improve the health of Englewood’s youth.
