Age-Friendly Englewood projects underway PHOTO/CITY OF ENGLEWOOD Dining establishments earn honors from Health Dept. On Feb. 11, the Englewood Health Department recognized seven food establishments for achieving a Satisfactory rating for two consecutive years without any critical violations: Crispy Crust Pizza, Dwight Morrow- King Academies High School Cafeteria, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Trattoria Carpaccio, Dunkin Donuts, and Lucky Roll Ice Cream & Boba. Represen- tatives for each business recently received a Food Service Recognition Award from the Englewood Health Dept. ‘Second Sunday’ concert schedule Age-Friendly Englewood and the Englewood Public Library are team- ing up to host Second Sundays Concerts, which are free and open to the public. Concerts so far this year featured the Calvin Hill jazz quartet, a concert of Burt Bacharach hits, and the popular Odessa Klezmer Band. Here’s the schedule for the months ahead: n Sunday, April 19, 5 p.m.: Jazz Guitarist Abe Ovadia n Sunday, May 10, 5 p.m.: Popular favorites with Gerard and Diane Barros n Sunday, June 14, 5 p.m.: Deni Bonet- Quirky, melodic, violin-based pop-rock. Age-Friendly Englewood is working with partner organiza- tions and providing funding for several projects in town. The goal is to alleviate isolation and improve safety and good health while helping Englewood become a great place for people of all ages. n Pedestrian Safety: Working with the City’s Traffic Advisory Committee, chaired by Council member Cheryl Rosenberg, and the City Engineer, Age-Friendly Englewood is forming an “army of advocates” to encourage the City to do all it can to address the important need for pedestrian safety throughout Englewood. n “Cuff It” Blood Pres- sure Monitoring: Age-Friendly Englewood is partnering with the Department of Health to deliver “Cuff It,” a six-week program that culminates with participants receiving a free blood pressure monitoring kit, or cuff. The Dept. of Health is teaching 27 residents how to use the cuff as well the importance of good nutrition and exercise in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. n Community Garden at Tibbs Houses: In partnership with the Englewood Housing Authority, Age-Friendly Engle- wood has engaged well-regarded PHOTO/CITY OF ENGLEWOOD A “Cuff It” Blood Pressure Moni- toring Program was held Feb. 24 at the Englewood Public Library. landscape architect Paul Keyes to design a garden at 111 West St., which will include landscaping as well as raised beds for flower and vegetable gardening. n DooWop Show: To celebrate Older Americans Month in May, Age-Friendly Englewood is partnering with bergenPAC to present “Oh What A Night of Doo Wop & Rock & Roll Volume IV” from LARS Enterprises on Saturday, May 16, at 7 p.m. The show features Kenny Vance & The Planotones, as well as other notable groups and a tribute to the original Duprees. Healthy eating events instill importance of good nutrition The Community Chest, Englewood Health and the Englewood Health Department are partnering to host a series of “Healthy Eating” programs at various locations through- out Englewood. The goal of the programs is to instill in those who attend the importance of good nutrition and healthy eating in order to avoid diabetes and obesity, hypertension, and other effects of poor nutrition. The Healthy Eating programs provide a free meal to families and individuals invited to attend through the host location as well as through the Center for Food Action and Office of Concern. While enjoying the dinner, guests learn from health educators about nutrition and the importance of healthy eating. After the meal and the program, guests are provided with a bag full of the ingredients to prepare 6 MARCH 2020 MYENGLEWOOD the meal themselves as well as recipes and encouragement to continue “healthy eating.” To date, over 400 people have enjoyed the dinners, all prepared by volunteer chefs Michael Chun, Nancy Schonberg and LaPromenade. Healthy Eating programs have been hosted by St. Paul’s Church, First Presbyterian Church, Galilee United Methodist Church, Community Baptist Church of Englewood, First Baptist Church, and Tibbs Houses. Meals are planned for the months ahead at Ebenezer Baptist Church and Shiloh AME Zion Church.
