Tripping in the Netherlands
The dreadful sound of the alarm made me squirm, so I grabbed the clock and threw it at
the wall with the hope that the terrible noise would finally stop. Crap, I thought as the clock hit
the wall harder than I thought it would. In my head I counted, three, two, one. “What the hell was
that?” muttered Lisa groggily, still not ready to abandon her dream and open her eyes. I looked at
the clock and told her that we needed to get ready as soon as possible, if we wanted to reach
Groningen in time. We had already packed our bags the night before, so all we had to do now
was shower, get dressed and check out of the hotel room.
“Are you all set?” I heard Jake’s voice before I noticed his tall frame enter our room. I
told him that we were almost ready, while I looked around the hotel room one last time in case I
had forgotten something. On this lengthy journey around Europe, I had already left my favorite
pair of denim shorts, my tank top and a floral one-piece swimsuit in various hotels. I scanned the
room one last time before heading out, intent on not losing anything again. Jake and Sam
grabbed our bags in order to place them in our rented white Audi, while Lisa and I went to the
reception, to check out of our rooms. I recounted our trip to the German lady working at the
reception, who was grinning as she handed us our passports and told us to have a safe journey.
We got into the backseat of the car, Jake started up the engine and Sam started flipping through
various German radio stations, before finally landing on an English one. He cranked up the
volume and we set off.
