Locals prepare for celebrations
on National Skatepark Day!
T
he popularity of scooters, skateboards and
BMX bikes has boomed in recent times and
there’s no denying that our local skatepark
has become a buzzing hub of active recreation in
the community. In recognition of this and to show
support for local riders and skaters The Space
North Lakes has signed up to be part of 2014
National Skatepark Day.
The Space Youth Committee has been busily
organizing the event to be held on Sunday, 7th
of September in a day set to involve scooter and
skateboard competitions, aerosol art workshops,
father’s day photo booth, face painting, and skate
and scooter workshops for under 10s at The
Space North Lakes youth centre. Preparation for
this group of motivated young people has involved
participation in event management webinars
(which have covered topics like risk assessments
and acquiring sponsorship), as well as brainstorming and identifying local opportunities and activities
the community will love.
The event is being driven by local young people
and supported by YMCA of Brisbane, who manage
The Space North Lakes youth facility, which is
owned by Moreton Bay Regional Council.
Stephanie Blunt, The Coordinator at The Space
said “National Skatepark Day has given us fantastic opportunity to put on a great event for
the local young people and their families. It has
all the ingredients of giving young people a really
valuable experience. Being able to contribute to
community activities is such a great way to develop confidence and real skills. Events like National
