MY TOWN AND MY COUNTRY | Page 3

Our town Catona is named by the great Italian poet Dante Alighieri in his masterpiece “La Divina Commedia” : “ And that horn of Ausonia that includes Bari, Gaeta and Catona where Tronto and Verde flow into the sea ” ( Paradiso, VIII ,lines 61-62). In the principal square , there is a statue dedicated to Dante Alighieri Dante described the kingdom of Charles Martel as a triangle whose extreme points consisted of Bari at the east , Gaeta at the west, and Catona at the south . At that time in Catona there was a war between the Angioins and the Aragoneses, and "Ausonia“for Dante was synonymous with Italy.
