11. TEACHING OTHERS KNOWLEDGE
FIELDS
Common sense suggests that one cannot
teach what one does not know. Yet even a
wonderfully prepared teacher cannot
know everything that is relevant to the
material he or she teaches in a given year.
The research on learning provides not only
support for the basic proposition that
teachers benefit from substantial study in
their fields, but also a sophisticated model
for thinking about what it takes to teach
subject matter well.
