How could dance and movement
help teach an English lesson? What
could families find in a scavenger
hunt at a local museum? What
about trying to create a modern art
masterpiece?
Lucky for educators, families and
students, Uptown Charlotte’s
museums, entertainment and
cultural venues are more than places
to take in the Queen City’s art
scene. They offer unique learning
opportunities and a place for
families to enjoy exploring together.
From a dance company to a museum
with not one – but two - unique
locations, these are locales to be
remembered.

Founded in 1970, North Carolina Dance
Theatre is the oldest professional ballet
company in the state. The members of
the dance ensemble not only “wow”
theatergoers with fancy footwork, grace
and musical interpretation, they are also
dedicated to education and outreach.
“We have performances, dance classes
and educational programs,” says Logan
McSwain, director of marketing and
communications. “N.C. Dance Theatre
dancers travel to local schools and do
performances especially for students.”
N.C. Dance Theatre makes it easy
for educators to integrate dance and
movement into curriculum for a variety
of subjects through its Primary Educator
Enrichment Program (PEEP). Teachers
can also arrange to bring students to a
live show or invite professional dancers
to perform at a school.
The company also offers lecture
demonstrations, educational
performances and an after-school dance
program.
