Thanks to careful planning, Goldston says now Nkosi looks forward to his three-times-a-day teeth cleaning – just like more than 700,000 visitors a year look forward to the treat-trading, chest-thumping, baby-hugging animals at the NC Zoo. ‘I want to do that!’ If figuring out how to keep a gorilla’s teeth healthy sounds like fun, you might want to take care of gorillas one day. After high school, you can earn a college degree in zoology or biology or animal sciences. It’s good to get experience working at a zoo with other primate species before you work your way into the world of gorillas, advises NC Zoo Animal Management Supervisor Chris Goldston. “Zookeeping is a labor of love,” he says. “It is a passion you have for wanting to care for something that lives in the wild. We don’t try to get really close to them because they are still wild animals, but zookeepers do form an attachment to their animals they are keeping. It is not a profession that makes a lot of money. If you want to live in a $10 million mansion, you won’t do this on that salary, but if you’re looking for a job that is rewarding, this is the place to be.”
