Goldston: Gorillas usually communicate with each other through vocal sounds, grumbles, gestures and facial expressions. Beating their chests is a warning sign, to let other gorillas or humans know they are in charge. They are trying to say, “This is my territory.” If a gorilla is feeling threatened, he may charge at you. A gorilla is very sneaky and sometimes he may take advantage of a situation. You may let your guard down. For example, there are certain places where you just don’t put your hands or feet. He may challenge you and see if he can grab your hand. Carly: So how do you develop trust and a relationship with the gorillas? How long does that usually take? Goldston: It takes quite a while. It’s kind of like how you meet a new person at your school and how you decide if that person will become your friend. So over time, you get to know each other. With gorillas, they recognize us by our faces, by our sound and our daily routine. There are a select group of people who work with the gorillas on a daily basis and because of that daily interaction, it makes them more comfortable with us.
