HowChronic Disease Can Be
Prevented Through Dietary Changes
and Exercise
Chronic health conditions such as diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, high cholesterol,
heart disease, osteoporosis, sleep apnea, cancer, celiac disease, and a variety of auto-immune
diseases have been linked to diet and lifestyle. In societies where people commonly consume
processed food and lead sedentary lives, the numbers of people with chronic disease increases
sharply. In contrast, societies that consume more plant-based foods or agricultural societies
that also lead physically active lives, aren’t suffering from these same types of illnesses.
What’s more is that the CDC (Center For Disease Control) reports that 70% of all deaths are the
result of chronic diseases. Those suffering from chronic illness not only live shorter lives, but
their quality of life is significantly reduced as well. 75% of today’s health care cost is spent on
treating preventable chronic disease and this can really hit home for those who have to pay out
of pocket for rising health care expenses. Dealing with a preventable chronic illness can be
devastating physically, emotionally, and financially.
But there is good news and there is hope! Even if you were a home-grown American who grew
up eating fast food and ate other harmful things found in the Standard American Diet (SAD),
you can still lead a healthier life moving forward. Studies show that making dietary changes
even later in life, such as choosing to eliminate processed foods, sugar, grains, alcohol, and
tobacco and increase your diet so it’s rich in fruits, vegetables and lean protein, can reverse
most chronic diseases, no matter what your age. When you increase your level of exercise on
top of that, you’ve got the recipe for a longer, happier, healthier life.
There is no time like the present to change your life for the better. Even if you are overweight
and not sure where to start, studies show that those who were overweight and did 150 minutes
of moderate exercise each week lived 3.9 years longer than those who were overweight and did
not exercise. Even those with a healthier weight lived 4.7 years longer compared to those who
had a normal weight but did not exercise.
