Aquarium Fish Species
In the tank, there should be some space
for the fi sh to swim and some water fl ow
running along the tank length. Th is fi sh is
susceptible to water purity, and the water
fi ltration system must be very effi cient.
Th is type of fi sh feels secure and confi dent
in a school of its own kind and is known
for its playful nature. It loves company and
should be kept in pairs of either 4 or six. It
is vital to control the level of ammonia and
nitrates in the tank for Glassfi sh to thrive.
Th e GLASSFISH - Glass catfi sh
(Kryptopterus bicirrhis) — is a freshwater
ray-fi nned fi sh of catfi sh family that is
found in South-Eastern Asia. It derives its
name from the fact that it is transparent
and you can see right through it. Glass
catfi sh or ghost catfi sh is found in the
rivers of Th ailand and Indonesia.
Th e size of the feed should be little or
fl aky as the fi sh has a small mouth. Glass
catfi sh may feed on some fi sh minors
as they do in their natural habitat. Glass
catfi sh is quite demanding as a fi sh and
needs excellent care.
White cloud mountain minnow - Th e
White cloud mountain minnow is a bright
coloured and active fi sh. It is not aggressive
or demanding which makes it an ideal
choice for fi rst-time fi sh owners. Th e
Biological name of this fi sh is Tanichthys
albonubes. White cloud mountain minnow
does well in cold water and prefers to swim
in the middle water layers.
It is also known as Baiyun and was fi rst
found at the White Cloud Mountain
located several kilometres north of central
Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China.
Unfortunately, the species is now extinct
in that area and features on China’s ‘List of
Endangered Species’.
Th e White Cloud Mountain Minnow is
about 4 cms (roughly 1.5 in) in length. It
is rather plainly coloured and the upper-
side of its back is yellowy-brown. Silver
blue and golden stripes run along the fi sh’s
body from its eyes to the tail. Th e back
is green, and the abdomen white. It has

lemon-yellow, dorsal, abdominal fi ns. Th e
medial side of the fi sh fl uke is red coloured
and the fi sh dorsal and fl uke have two
colours: lemon-yellow and bright-red. Th e
White Cloud Mountain Minnow feeds on
small insects and worms but it also quickly
adapts to regular fi sh food.
Th e tank for this fi sh should be at least 30

litres large. If kept in a sickly planted tank
with dark bottom substrate, the fi sh may
turn purple in colour. Th ere’s no need for
active fi ltration; however, some water fl ow
should be created in the tank. Th e water
temperature range should be between
20°C-25°C (68-75 F) to keep the White
cloud mountain minnow healthy and
active.
