Issue 3, June 2010 Graph 1: Showing the average ozone level in all of the neighborhoods in µg/m 3 (calculated by adding all the measured levels of ozone in the different days and divided by 3): to a park than it was in Reduta, showed lower ozone pollution for Geo Milev. For my next research I would conduct this experiment in different seasons to see if there is a change in the level of ozone on the surface of the Earth during different seasons. I would additionally like to see if the ozone level changes when raining, snowing, or during extremely cold/hot weather. To improve my investigation next time I would include even more different neighborhoods of Sofia in my research as well as experiments indoors and outdoors. Please contact Natalia Manolova, ACS Alumni Magazine Editor (n.manolova@acs.bg), for the full text of the project including works cited. Map 1: Showing all the places strips were put in Sofia: Relatively, ozone level is highest during working days. It decreases during weekends and it drops significantly during nights. The highest level of ozone was seen in Darvenitza – with average equal to150µg/m 3 , while the lowest air pollution level was in the ACS campus (68.3 µg/m 3 ). In all other neighborhoods the average ozone level was between 108.3 and 130 µg/m 3 . There is a trend showing that going down to the centre of Sofia – the ozone pollution increases, however, centre areas closer to parks such as Geo Milev – have lower level of ozone than those farther of parks such as Reduta. The limits given by the Bulgarian Ministry of Environment and Water, were exceeded everywhere except on ACS campus. According to Table 1, the level of ozone in all parts of Sofia is unhealthy for children and people in the sensitive group, causing respiratory diseases to all citizens of the capital. My hypothesis was thus proven right. I expected that ACS campus will be less polluted than other places because of its location (near Vitosha Mountain) and results show exactly that. And because urbanized areas are more polluted than those next to parks the measurement in Geo Milev, made closer 9
