DORMANT SEASON

PRUNING

DECEMBER 1 , 2016 – MARCH 1 , 2017
With the onset of the 2016 drought , prevalent Winter Moth , and the arrival of Gypsy Moth , trees are under added stress . A prudent tree care plan is necessary to combat these challenges and winter is a perfect time to set a recovery plan in motion .
Dormant season pruning works with your tree ’ s physiology to conserve stored energy and promote healthy spring growth .
It also allows our certified arborists to clearly see a tree ’ s structure and more easily access it for proper care and less disruption to frozen ground , and the spread of insects and diseases is greatly reduced .

STAY CURRENT

Drought and gypsy moth are hot topics of discussion among homeowners concerned about the health and longevity of their landscapes . Although most people just get the headlines , these are complicated issues with layers of information . In response , we have designed our website to serve as a resource for emerging questions . There you will find expanded information and links . Did you know that trees “ talk ” – actually make noise – when they are thirsty ? Visit the drought section of our website and listen to the sounds of a parched tree , or link to a fascinating TED talk on how trees communicate with each other in an elaborate , underground web of mycorrhizae . Connect with us here , and on our other social media platforms , to stay “ in the know ” about issues that affect your plant health care decisions .

How sweet it is

Would you like to help save the pollinators ? Have you ever considered including a beehive in your landscape plan ?
Honeybees are often misunderstood as being aggressive or potentially dangerous to the homeowner , but are quite the opposite . Honeybee hives can blend beautifully into your property while the bees stay very focused on performing critical pollination for 60 % of our food crops . If this interests you , our designers will create a beautiful plan , whether it is on a rooftop or in a formal garden . We then call on our good friends at Best Bees , who are the experts at installing and maintaining your hives , while you simply provide a comfortable home base . And best of all , the honey produced on your property is harvested by the professional beekeepers and delivered to your front door ! Visit BestBees . com for more information on their services or contact us to discuss incorporating bees into your landscape design .
Our friends at Best Bees can now tell you exactly where your bees are traveling and what plants they visit most often . By performing a DNA test on batches of honey , they can determine exact percentages of the different pollens contributing to the honey production . It ’ s kind of like having a GPS tracking on for our sweetest insects . Flavors are affected by these percentages and the subtle nuances of the varieties proves that each batch of honey is really one-of-akind .
We announced in our last newsletter that HMI got a beehive , and we were thrilled when Best Bees delivered 39 jars of liquid gold from our first harvest . Give us a call if you ’ d like us to send you a sample .
