EPA and DHA Omega-3 Market
Key Segment for Future Growth
European intake levels need improvement
The EPA and DHA Omega-3 industry in Europe is a relatively mature market, with
raw material revenues reported at $258 million for 2015, and recent sales in the
market are actually down, particularly in the dietary supplement category. Despite
this, Europeans do not get enough Omega-3s and educating consumers has never
been more important.
According to the Global Burden of Disease report, 1 in 7 coronary heart disease
deaths in Western Europe are linked to low EPA and DHA intake, and scientific
research continues to be published on a daily basis supporting the link between
Omega-3s and lowering triglycerides and blood pressure as well as reducing the risk
of coronary heart disease and cardiac death. Additional science shows benefits in
the categories of brain health, eye health and fetal and infant development.
That’s why the messages here at Vitafoods from Omega-3 companies are so
important to stimulate future growth. The Omega-3 industry enjoys a reputation of
scientifically-based quality products with no safety challenges, and there is still
tremendous growth potential. Product offerings reflect the breadth of a healthy
industry — whether you choose a product made from anchovy, salmon, cod liver,
krill or algae, the goal of increasing EPA and DHA intake for your customers and
consumers is important for public health, and for ensuring a healthy market in the
future.
