introduction Dear Reader, It is with great pleasure that I present this publication to you. It is a culmination of 40 years of partnership between Catholic Welfare Services (CWS) and the Canossian Sisters in serving the sick and needy. In 1978, with the help of kind benefactors, CWS and the Sisters started St Joseph’s Home in response to the needs of the immigrants like the samsui women and majies who had little support in their old age. Back then, the Sisters had little resources. But determined to bring life and meaning to the residents, they got creative and tapped their network to give good nursing, psychosocial and spiritual care. When the call came to start a hospice, the Sisters once again rose to the occasion and with the help of donors, started the service in 1985. Through the years, they have built a reputation for providing quality comfort care in the last stages of life. Looking ahead, the future presents many opportunities for us to continue the legacy of the Canossian foundress – St Magdalene of Canossa. She gave up her riches and noble life to dedicate her time and energy to serve the poor. We too can try to give up a little of ourselves toward improving the lives of those who need help. We can also try to imagine how we would like to grow older and in one way or other, help make that a reality. It could be by being more involved in the lives of our parents or grandparents, learning more about ageing and seniors and volunteering or partnering with St Joseph’s Home in embracing ageing with dignity. Here’s to the next 40 years! Looking ahead, the future presents many opportunities for us to continue the legacy of the Canossian foundress – St Magdalene of Canossa. She gave up her riches and noble life to dedicate her time and energy to serving the poor. We too can try to give up a little of ourselves toward improving the lives of those who need help.
