Smart Governance
Intro / J P Gupta
As a leader if you are bringing change, bring the hardest, biggest change early in the game. People are going to complain anyway of any change- hard or soft, big or small, but if it is a big change, the benefi ts could also be big
Effective Medicines Usually Taste Bitter
“ is no inherent reason why medicines should taste horrible— but effective ones usually do. Similarly, there is no inherent reason why decisions should be distasteful— but most effective ones are,” so wrote the world famous Management Guru Peter Drucker in his famous book‘ The Effective Executive’.
Such a quote can be reviewed in the context of demonetization of higher value currency by the India government on November 8. Is it a bitter pill administrated to the Indian economy to cure it of its black money disease? Its bitter taste itself is a proof of its effectiveness.
Reports from different places, of people struggling to keep their bank accounts in order and seizure of high value currency notes, just add to its effectiveness. Though the focus of the drive has slightly changed from unearthing the black money to usher in a more cashless economy it nevertheless undermines the core essence of the drive. The disease of black money has become so pervasive in India that it is eating up all vital organs of the country.
Demonetization is a great move. It should take place in every 10 years to stop the fake and grounded currency and parallel economy. But we are seeing it as a failure because common people are not getting enough cash. Has government failed to implement it?
No. RBI and the government did a good job in laying down the rules and procedures but private and corporate banks went rough and started supplying new currency to the black money holders. It ' s really difficult to identify the problem if it ' s in your own system. You cannot blame government for each and every wrong thing others are doing. These people have been doing it for the last 70 years, they have expertise in it.
Government needs support in implementing all policies like swacch Bharat abhiyan. Without the support from its people, no government can do well. Be thankful at least this government is doing something.
As a leader if you are bringing change, bring the hardest, biggest change early in the game. People are going to complain anyway of any change- hard or soft, big or small, but if it is a big change, the benefits could also be big.
