I wanted to challenge myself to make a range of different types of
concept art. To explore how I could represent the animation in
a unique way which children would still respond well to. When
creating my characters and environments I ended up creating a lot
of traditional art. I loved the look of the characters in the water-
colour. I went to many places to sketch in person and get primary
environment research. Collecting these I was able to come up
with different designs. The amount of watercolour studies really
motivated and inspired the look of the final animation.
I was inspired by British animation, my style boards were collected
from such animations as “The Snowman” and “We’re going on a
bear hunt”. I was drawn to Quentin Blake and Briony May Smith,
two illustrators who have a roughness that is exciting and fluid.
What I took away from such works was the richness and texture.
After doing the lots of experiments wit different mediums of con-
cept art I knew I wanted to be experimental with pencil lines with
a watercolour look. These experiments were very vital in allowing
me to settle on a textured piece of animation.
