Wagwan Dancers
They came, saw and they definitely conquered. This may sound like a cliché but it’ s one of the few ways you can describe dancing sensation Wagwan. They gained national and international fame for their self-titled dance move that was featured in Rapper Collo’ s music video Bazokizo.
How did the move end up in Collo’ s music video with the same name? Bruz Newton who is a mutual friend saw the move and really liked it. Since he’ s an experienced dancer he helped with the choreography. He later told us that Collo was interested in working with us. We immediately said yes, polished up the move and the rest as they say is history.
Life today Mgazine talks to the young group of four at their hood in Dandora to understand the story behind the dance move, how their lives have changed since then and their aspirations for the future.
Who are Wagwan Dancers? This is a group of three young guys and a girl who are passionate about dancing. We have been friends for a very long time and it’ s through dancing that we’ ve been able to stick together. We shot to the limelight after our dance move Bazokizo was featured on the Collo’ s music video.
Why the name Bazokizo? Omosh: I had a Rwandese friend called Bazokizo who loved doing this funny move. At fi rst I didn’ t take it seriously but since he kept doing it around me I found myself doing it. Soon my friends were doing it too and it was the coolest move around. We started modifying and improving it bit by bit.
We then named the move after our good Rwandese friend who also features in the video.
There are very many dancers in the video are they all part of the group? No we had to include other dancers to make the video better. But most of the other dancers are our friends from other crews.
Did you expect the video to get such a positive reaction? Omosh: No never it was a complete shock. I was out and about minding my business when I started receiving calls from friends and family saying they saw us on TV and they really loved our moves.
Benja: Tulikuwa tunajibamba( We were just having fun) doing what we love. We were in disbelief it felt like a dream, a dream and we didn’ t want to wake up.
ProphyDela: No! The reception been crazy we really thank God.
Corazon: I was really astonished. I didn’ t think people would react that way. We then got interview on The trend by Larry Madowo, 10 over 10 on Citizen TV, K24 Alfajiri among others all these big interviews really surprised us and we are thankful to God.
