Universities
There are four classes of award in the National Framework of Qualifi cations:
Major Awards: named in the outer rings, are the principal class of awards made at a level
Minor Awards: are for partial completion of the outcomes for a Major Award
Supplemental Awards: are for learning that is additional to a Major Award
Special Purpose Awards: are for relatively narrow or purpose-specifi c achievement

QQI (Quality and Qualifications Ireland) is the national awarding body for all
further education and training in Ireland. It is a statutory body which ensures
recognition of all education and training qualifications on a national and
international level. At the end of certain learning programmes, students are
encouraged to submit proof of their learning in portfolio for assessment.
