The HR & OB Society
Q. Could you share about your life at FMS and experiences in HRSoc?
From the beginning, I had the clarity about being in the HR domain but I did not have a clear idea
what the domain offered because i joined the college as a fresher. I gained that understanding
overtime from the support of faculty specially VenkatRaman Sir, Mahima Ma’am. Then i got
elected as an Associate Member of HR society and started the magazine HRegatta. We created
a few HR competitions and started quizzes to update people and helped people with the soft skills
and communications part. Help people frame their basic HR questions. In 2013, i served the
society as the President of Hr society and actively worked towards conducting mock interviews
for the placements and coordinated with professionals to conduct interactions for people who
needed extra help with CVs and interviews. Improved upon the existing mentorship programme
and strived to create a compatibility within the programme so the mentee could easily identify with
their mentors. Overall, it was a very good experience something I remember and cherish till date.
Q. How would you define the concept of “Perfect Career”?
The first step towards achieving the perfect career is to identify what you want and that is achieved
through active introspection. Know where your interest lies and do not simply be swayed by
profiles which pay more. If people are not aware of their interests and aspire the roles because
of the pay-grade it creates a mismatch of aspirations and this is unearthed only when they start
the job. Even when you many not like all aspects of the job, it is recommended to keep an open
mind about the job and have a holistic perspective and not think in silos. Even in a specialist role,
you must have a broader understanding of the entire business. I personally do not believe in a
perfect career; it is a careful mapping of interest and capabilities that get matched to the job. It is
very important to network well, to know
more about the happening in the
business domain, talk to and network
with as many people as you can and
explore the various business domains
and learn from as many sources as
you can. Keep learning, plan your
career as you go along, identify your
strengths and weaknesses, work on
each, improve yourself and you will
achieve that perfect role that suits your
interests.
Q. What is your final word of advice for our readers?
Read a lot and read holistically. Know about the latest technologies and keep yourself updated
through courses and develop your skills. Focus on your communications skills because a great
idea is as great as it is rendered. Work on your CV, be concise, highlight your achievements and
prepare well. Wish you all the best for your placements!
