Emily’s
Time
E
Emily Jones, head of The Putney School in
Vermont, shares her ideas with Feminizine
on what she thinks about feminism and her
experiences with applying these ideas in her life.
mily grew up in a family with well-educated
parents and has a brother who is a year older.
In Emily’s childhood, she was always an
energized tomboy, climbing trees and running
around. Yet, her parents wanted her to be
more feminine and well-mannered. Although
her family treated her and her brother equally,
Emily’s father had a higher expectation for her
brother. He was always more interested in her
brother’s career path than hers simply because
she was a girl.
Feminism was an idea that crossed Emily’s mind during
middle school. Since the whole feminism movement
was prominent during the 1970s, she started to pay
attention to it like everyone else. These days, Emily is
fascinated by how each generation influences the idea
of feminism. She thinks this generation is pushing the
conversation forward, but she worries about women’s
readiness to claim weakness rather than strength. From
her different living experiences in many countries,
she knows that gender relations in different countries
generate various assumptions, so she experiences the
idea of feminism differently with different cultures.
