REFUGIUM, URBAN NETWORK OF MICRO GETAWAYS AS A MODEL OF PREVENTIVE HEALTH CARE; CASE ZAGREB
The decision about the place of living is one of the key in an individual ' s life. Studies have shown that residents outside the wider metropolitan areas show much higher levels of happiness, but urban life can be harmful in terms of chronical stress, anxiety and depression, potentially leading to cardiovascular or respiratory diseases. Global crisis, large hospitality programs that consume space and expensive technology in urban areas all point to the great potential of low-tech forms of health care. Have we then made a full circle in relation to ancient Greece when the lack of scientific knowledge has put an emphasis on natural healing processes and connection with art or religion? Idea for REFUGIUM, urban getaway derives from specific protected structures-refugiums, Illyric fortresses which served as temporary residence at times of danger or other extraordinary circumstances around 5th century BC. Further analysis deal with different kinds of getaways through history of western civilization. Aim of this work was to design a special place based on principles of phenomenology, which would through its micro scale and sustainability serve as place for healing symptoms of stress caused by living inside urban areas. Those micro getaways are located inside the urban structure, interpolated to the points of greatest air, noise, allergy pollution etc. in the case of city of Zagreb. Finally, they form a revolutionary network of preventive health care centers by healing both the city and its residents.
