TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE GROWING COMPLEXITY AND DIVERSITY O F THE NEED OF ONCOLOGY PATIENTS
In respect of the growing complexity and diversity of the need of oncology patients in the Hannover Medical School the nursing management took their responsibility.
During their treatment cancer patients and their families have to cope with many different challenges focused on physical and psychological problems and changes in their social life. After the diagnosis cancer, they often try to get as many information as possible, via internet, television, brochures or talks with family members and friends. But to understand there diagnosis, treatment and prognosis they need to evaluate all these different and confusing information.
In 2016 a concept to support oncology departments, without oncology nurse specialists, has been implemented. Therefore a group of three experienced oncology nurse specialists was formed. They are specialized in radiology, dermatology and bone marrow transplant.
These nurses take care for patient education focused on symptom management, side effects and coping with the cancer diagnosis. They also inform and support the health care professionals about these subjects useful( evidence based) guidelines in different departments.
Therefore a very close network with the team and other health care professionals as social workers, psychologists, palliative care team members, pharmacists and home care is important.
In between 09 / 16 and 03 / 17some data were evaluated: The oncology nurses specialist team visited 106 oncology patients, the visit took about 40 minutes, the main topics have been mucositis, dermatology, side effects as nausea / vomiting, pruritus, pain and loss of appetite. Coping with the disease was also a problem for the patients and family members to focus on.
