SUPPORT OF CARING RELATIVES BY CUSTOMISED
INFORMATION VIA MOBILE DEVICE
Background: In Germany 1.58 million people are in need of home based care.
Nearly every second of them are cared for at home by their relatives without
nursing services [1]. Those relatives are often at their physical and mental limits.
Aim: The aim of the project MoCaB (Mobile Care Backup) is to decrease physical
and mental stress of informal care givers through proactive provision of knowledge
by a mobile device. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and
Research. Methods: Interviews with 10 caring relatives were carried out to
understand the mental and physical burden of informal care givers as well as a
review of relevant literature. Results: The interviews showed lack of knowledge
and selfcare abilities of the relatives as well as social isolation. The care giver
burden inventory (CBI) [2] will be used to evaluate the physical and mental
condition of the care giver. The CBI consists of five different areas: time
dependency, development, physical health, emotional health, social relationship.
Small learning units linked to the CBI will be created to address identified
challenging areas to empower the care giver. Discussion: The support of caring
relatives remains a huge challenge. If the learning units fit to the individual
circumstances, the provided information can help to decrease the physical and
mental stress of caring relatives.
