Hidden Figures Movie Review: Plot
Dorothy Vaughan
Rising Action
Whilst attending to her duties at the West Computing Group, Dorothy discovers the recently-acquired machinery in one of the rooms in NASA. She inquires about it to Ms. Mitchell and finds out that it is a unit of International Business Machines, equipment that were invented to compute mathematical digits very efficiently and swiftly. This could cost the women at the West Computing Group their jobs. Instead of being threatened by the potential competition, Dorothy takes action to learn about operating the equipment. She even risked being at a library dedicated "only for whites" to research. Surely enough, she was the only person able to operate the machine and even taught her coworkers. As a result, they had new jobs that were stable.
CLIMAX
Taking the risk at the library certainly ruled in Dorothy's favor. She did not only learn about operating the IBM, she even provided new jobs for her colleagues at the West Computing Group. This was a much-needed relief for them because they knew that the equipment threatened their employment. As a fruit of her efforts, Dorothy became the supervisor for that department. In fact, she became the first African-American supervisor at NASA. This was an occupation she had been desiring for quite a long time; a position that she had already been attending to despite not receiving the salary for it.
FALLING ACTION
After being awarded the position of Supervisor, Dorothy receives the well-deserver respect of Ms. Mitchell. For the first time, she addresses Dorothy as Ms. Vaughan, a sign of high regard. Also, Dorothy expressed her stand that racial segregation is completely pointless and unnecessary by welcoming "white" women into her department and assisting them in the ins and outs of the machinery.
EXPOSITION
Being one of those more experienced among the women in the West Computing Group, Dorothy took on the responsibility of being a stand-in supervisor while the official one was absent. However, as the days dragged on and there was still no sign of their actual supervisor, Dorothy adapted to the job like clockwork. She led the women into doing their duties as they should. The problem was that she was not receiving the recognition she deserved for her efforts. She was often belittled by the "white" Americans at NASA despite the fact that they basically worked for the same cause: sending a man to the moon, something that had never been done then.
DENOUEMENT
Dorothy felt like she was being left out in the progress experienced by Mary and Katherine. She made it clear that she was joyful for their being recognized especially because it was a huge step for African-Americans in general. However, Dorothy was aware that she was already attending to the duties of a supervisor but she was not being recognized as one. It was even more unfortunate that she was not receiving the salary of one. This is why when she saw the opportunity to escalate her knowledge, she grabbed it almost immediately. She utilized what she had obtained to propel herself for more chances. This resulted to commiting a huge achievement on behalf of African-Americans. Dorothy also served as an inspiration to other women, even her sons to not let societal constructs bring them down. Dorothy started out as an assertive woman who clearly had the disposition of a leader and she remained so.
