Letter from our Chairperson
Thank you for your interest in our Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives at the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority . Our organization ’ s social responsibility , environmental performance , workforce effectiveness , community engagement and quality of service to the public are important areas of focus for the Board of Directors .
These commitments were fundamental as we navigated the challenges of COVID-19 . We maintained our focus on assuring safe and healthy facilities for our workers and customers as we collaborated with airlines and other business and government partners to restore our airports to their pre-pandemic levels of growth and success . We are pleased that passenger volume at the end of 2022 approached and , in some instances , surpassed pre-pandemic levels of 2019 . Airlines are adding new destinations and restoring flights that were reduced or suspended during the pandemic . New airlines have joined the 40-plus carriers serving our airports - a testament to the strength of the Washington , D . C . market and the skill of and sound management by our team . Airport concessionaires idled during the pandemic are back in business , thanks in large part to our programs of rent relief and other assistance extended by our team . Ridership on the Dulles Toll Road is recovering as workers across the region return to their offices .

Beyond this progress , the Airports Authority achieved several major milestones during 2022 , led by November ’ s widely celebrated opening of Phase 2 of the Metro Silver Line Project . The new stations connecting our region ’ s Metrorail public transit system to Dulles International Airport and other points in Washington , D . C ., Loudoun and Fairfax Counties is already a game-changer , providing a new affordable transportation option for our passengers , commuters , employees and other travelers across the Region . This option also will ease traffic , help the environment by taking vehicles off the roads and contribute to continuing economic growth along the Dulles Corridor .
This year ’ s report also highlights the Airports Authority ’ s expanded and enriched community involvement across the region , including the launch of a new employee volunteer program aimed at helping to connect our staff to the community and the creation of the Student Art Walk programs to entertain our airport customers and showcase the talents of the area ’ s high school students . This year ’ s report also features the celebration of Dulles International Airport ’ s 60 years of service .
During 2023 , we are working to transition this report to an Environment , Social and Governance or “ ESG ” format , which increasingly is becoming a standard measure of corporate social responsibility performance . On behalf of the Board of Directors , I thank the hundreds of people across the Airports Authority whose talent , dedication and hard work provide top-quality transportation services to the National Capital Region . We appreciate your interest in the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and we look forward to sharing with you more of our goals and accomplishments in the years ahead .
Sincerely ,
William E . Sudow
