Memorial Event Commemorates 1982 Crash of Air Florida Flight
Families and colleagues of those who lost their lives in the crash of 1982 Air Florida Flight 90 came together at Reagan National Airport ’ s Historic Lobby for a ceremony to remember the 40th anniversary of the accident .
The flight took off from DCA during a snowstorm and icy conditions on January 13 , that had congested roadway traffic around the region . Moments after takeoff , the plane crashed into the nearby 14th Street Bridge , damaging the bridge and striking seven vehicles before falling into the icy waters of the Potomac River . appreciated all your efforts in planning this recognition and finding so many family members . At the conclusion of the ceremony , each family received a replica of the memorial plaque with their loved one ’ s name inscribed . Passengers and visitors to DCA can view the plaque and sign a book of reflection at the north end of the Historic Lobby .
In all , 74 people on the flight and four motorists on the bridge lost their lives .
The memorial was a moment to honor victims , survivors , their families and first responders . Attendees representing 27 victims of the crash participated in the dedication of a memorial plaque . Vice President for Strategy and Operational Performance Christopher Paolino and Operations Policy Senior Analyst Jillian Gustafson hosted the ceremony . CEO Jack Potter delivered remarks recounting the events of that tragic day and thanking those who took part in rescue operations .
“ That catastrophic day 40 years ago and this gathering today are somber reminders of the enormous responsibility that all of us in the air travel industry have to keep safety at the forefront of everything we do and to always strive to make flying ever-safer ,” Potter said .
Paolino and Gustafson read aloud the names of the passengers , crew members and first responders in a poignant moment near the end of the ceremony .
