Our commitment extends beyond the aviation industry as we strive to create lasting value by enhancing our local community through various programs and partnerships . Our initiatives are concentrated where we can use our expertise to make a significant difference , focusing on three key pillars :
Employee Giving and Events
Launched in 2022 , the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Employee Volunteer Program has made a substantial impact , with employees contributing more than 200 hours of volunteer service in 2023 . Notable activities include the following :
Earth Day Clean-Up - The Airports Authority hosted a volunteer event at
Innovation Elementary School to landscape , collect trash , plant flowers and perform other activities to help spruce up the school .
Dulles Day for the Special Olympics - The Dulles Day Plane Pull is an annual event sponsored by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department to benefit Special Olympics athletes . This event raised over $ 500,000 for Special Olympics Virginia .

Backpack Drive - The Airports Authority organized a back-to-school backpack drive for the Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus in D . C . Over 300 backpacks and school supplies were collected and distributed to three local schools : Washington School for Girls , Bishop Walker School for Boys and AppleTree Early Learning Public Charter School .
Wings For All - Employees volunteered for a program designed to empower families and aviation professionals by offering participants an " airport rehearsal ," which helps alleviate the stress often experienced by people with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families when traveling by air .

Breast Cancer Awareness - Employees participated in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk . This event , held at Washington ' s Tidal Basin , welcomed hundreds of people who walked side by side to show their support for the fight against breast cancer . Airports Authority staff raised over $ 1,400 in support of this cause .
Touch the Trucks - The Maintenance Department and Office of Public Safety participated in and provided equipment displays for hundreds of children at the Touch the Trucks charity event . The event benefited the Fauquier County , Virginia , Mental Health Association .
Food Drive - The Airports Authority collected and donated over 1,400 pounds of food to Food for Others , a non-profit organization dedicated to distributing food to individuals and families in need throughout Northern Virginia
United Service Organizations Holiday Care Pack - Employees volunteered with USO to provide 10,000 holiday care packs to service members deployed overseas during the holiday season .
Wreaths Across America - More than 50 Airports Authority employees and their families registered to place wreaths on the headstones of our fallen veterans . They played an important role in honoring and remembering our nation ' s heroes at Alexandria National Cemetery in Alexandria , Virginia , and Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Herndon , Virginia .
Girls in Aviation Day - Airports Authority employees co-facilitated a celebration with Women in Aviation International to showcase the career possibilities for women in the aviation field . Girls from all over the National Capital Region gathered to learn about opportunities in air travel .
