MUSTANG FEVER LADIES ON THE RISE DAVID AND GOLIATH The 2013-14 Lady Mustangs' basketball season was a step in the right direction. With the new coaching staff and new faces, there was a fresh outlook on what it takes to be successful. The Lady Mustangs featured a team with four juniors, seven sophomores, and one freshman. That bodes well for the future as everyone returns to a team that won four times as many games as the previous year. For only the second time in WCAC tournament history — a No. 8 seed upset a No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals, as McNamara knocked off top-ranked St. John’s, 73-68, on Saturday, February 22, at Gallaudet University. The highlight of the season came in a home win against the No. 20 ranked Good Counsel. The Lady Mustangs also traveled to New York City and Hampton, Virginia for tournaments and showed well. Junior Myka Johnson-Matthews led the team in scoring (10.5ppg) while garnering First Team AllWCAC honors and fellow junior Kholby Oliver led the WCAC in three point field goals (58) and honorable mention honors. Sophomore Morgan Smith and freshman Kyara Frames also received honorable mention WCAC honors. 18 THE MUSTANG MESSENGER McNamara was led by freshman Jamir Moultrie’s 18 points and a defensive effort that held the normally sharpshooting Cadets to just three three-pointers. St. John’s (26-3) cut the deficit to one in the final minute, but the youthful Mustangs remained poised down the stretch, knocking down 10 of their 12 free throws to help close out the upset. “The plan was to get them off the three-point line, so we played four different defenses, mixed it up as much as we could,” Mustangs Coach Marty Keithline said. “It was a real tough game and the kids executed the game plan well. I couldn’t be prouder of a team in my 13 years at McNamara.” THE MUSTANG MESSENGER 19
