P RESIDENT’S M ESSAGE
Dear Bishop McNamara Alumni, La Reine Alumnae, Family and
Friends,
Many of us have been to weddings and heard the frequently read
scripture verse in 1 Corinthians 13:
Love is patient, love is kind.
It is not jealous, it is not pompous,
It is not inflated, it is not rude,
it does not seek its own interests,
it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury,
it does not rejoice over wrongdoing
but rejoices with the truth.
It bears all things, believes all things,
hopes all things, endures all things.
and the verse concludes with:
So faith, hope, love remain, these three;
but the greatest of these is love.
Throughout my years at McNamara I have often heard the word
love used in a variety of contexts. Whether it is a student who
comments on how much they love a particular class or teacher, or
parents who talk about how much they love McNamara, alumni
who tell me how much they loved their high school years, love is
a commonly used word to describe the McNamara experience. I
also witness love every day by the way students respect and honor
one another and their teachers, in how they perform service for
those less fortunate, raise money for important causes, or stand
for justice in times of injustice. As well, there is the witness that
the teachers provide, who not only love what they do, but more
importantly, love being an integral part of the formation process of
the young people we are blessed to serve.

4 Spring 2013 MUSTANG MESSENGER
In a visit to the school today, you will see energized and
enthusiastic students, taught by passionate and caring teachers
who are utilizing cutting edge technology, yet grounded in virtues,
Catholic social thought, and age-old values. A trip down the hall
past the Library and St. Joseph Center, you will witness teachers
tutoring students who need assistance, see our Counseling Center
where counselors are helping students through the difficult time
of adolescence, and notice our English and Foreign Language
classrooms in which students are engaged in class discussion,
reciting Shakespeare, speaking new languages, or strengthening
their communication skills. As you head up the stairwells, you
may find a teacher sitting on the stairs helping a student through a
difficulty, and down the corridor past Math, Science, Social Studies
and IT classes, you will see students who are discovering, solving,
synthesizing, analyzing, and finding solutions to various problems.
Heading down the stairs by the gymnasium, see students
strengthen their mind, body and spirit, walk past the Moreau
Chapel where you may find students and/or teachers engaged in
a moment of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, then head into
the Fine Arts wing where students create, express and perform
and, finally, into Holy Cross Hall where students are engaged in
learning the faith and strengthening their relationship with Christ.
Even as I take this reminiscent stroll myself, one I have taken every
day for the past 16 years, I am smiling proudly knowing that at the
heart of this unique Holy Cross education is love.
This edition of the Mustang Messenger seeks to capture just a
fraction of that love and how it is expressed and witnessed at
Bishop McNamara on a daily basis. We also highlight for you
the love that alumni express for their alma mater through their
financial and emotional support, by attending events, and by
sporting their Maroon and Gold or Blue and White proudly. At
Bishop McNamara, where we emphasize faith, hope and love, the
greatest of these is love and today we celebrate and thank you for
loving us and for believing in us as we pay that love forward to
today’s young people—tomorrow’s leaders. We hope that you will
visit soon so that you can stroll the halls with me and re-live the
memories and witness the love that always has been, always is, and
always will be at the heart of Bishop McNamara High School.
