St. Lunatics were a male rap group that redefined the 2000's with trends that would change the way artists rapped while also changing the way hip hop followers dressed and talk. The group was formed in 1993 and after local success Nelly ended up landing a deal with Universal Music who also decide to sign the rest of the St. Lunatics. The group was made up of Nelly, Ali, Murphy Lee and City Spud.

In 2001 Universal Music released their debut album Free City.It debuted at no. 3 on the Billboard 200 and No. 18 in Canada selling 196,000 copies in its first week. The album was certified platinum a month later in the US and certified Gold in Canada. The title was inspired by the incarceration of City Spud who was serving a sentence for robbery during the release of the album.
