‘No Ordinary Love’ is the first single off of the fourth studio album Unconditional from Dallas, Texas quintet Memphis May Fire. Unconditional came out March 25, 2014 under Rise Records. The single was released February 6th, 2014 and pre-order bundles were also released for order on this date. The track seems to have religious overtones. While MMF doesn’t exactly identify themselves as a ‘Christian’ band, it shows through in this song especially; “God if you’re there I need to hear you now!”, “I'm so afraid to admit that you're real. Cause I'm afraid of what I might feel When your words start to come to life and it brings my demons into the light, but I know you're here, I shiver as you whisper in my ear "Child have no fear”, “I tried to save myself but I failed!”.
Lyrically and vocally I find this song phenomenal, maybe it’s because myself am religious, or it could just be that it’s actually a very well put together song. Even people who aren’t fans of MMF, or aren’t religious think this is a great track (according to the YouTube comments I went through). The breakdown at about the 1:04 mark brings it all together, and if brought home by the final line “I forgive you”. Whether you look at this song from a religious standpoint, or interpret it in a secular way, it’s a wonderful song about finding the love that you want and need, be it with God or something else, to make it through.
Rating: 3.5/5-I had never really listened to MMF until this track. I found it a bit funny they’re from Texas, I was expecting Tennessee (like no one’s ever heard that one before). But I thought this was a really nice song with a wonderful message. I’m a huge believer of looking for the message in a song, any song, as opposed to listening to how the message is delivered. I’m definitely looking forward to further singles as well as the entire album.
