The J & D Show creates generations of music
In August, The J&D Show – Joe and Dodie Moldan
of rural Hanska, MN (not John Deere) – helped out
Leon and Loretta of The Leon Olsen Show during a
break at a dance in Mapleton, MN.
The unique part of this duo is that Joe has been
totally deaf for nearly 41 years, and is still playing
the concertina as Dodie follows him on the piano.
In Dodie’s own word’s, “We are the deaf and dumb
couple.”
Before Joe lost his hearing, Joe and Dodie would
sing and play together. Dodie also plays drums.
They passed on their musical talents to their eight
children – two played tubas; two, clarinets; two,
trumpets; and two, trombones – when they were
young.
The music in their children’s lives continues today,
with their oldest child, Fred, and his family band,
Dain’s Dutchmen, and their second daughter, Loretta, in The Leon Olsen Show.
Joe and Dodie’s godson, Mike, plays drums and
trumpet in several local bands, too.
Their grandchildren and great-grandchildren
participate in dance lines, choir, and band concerts
