Back ground image: pastel on paper, Electricity, by Mari Luscombe, 2013. by Nigel Grenier I sat atop a hill constructed of toil and soil, like a culmination of all the deeds that had built and defined this old warrior. When I was born, this area had been a grassy expanse, like a blanket draped over the bent arm of the Ksan. Above me, the stars shone brilliantly. They reminded me of buttons on the blanket that had been handed down to me from my uncle. He would have gazed upon the same stars, just as my ancestors had done since time immemorial, a crest for all humanity. There was no hint of sunlight and no wind. All was dark and silent, and then… deer hooves in the distance. They rattled together like a cascade of pebbles. It was the signal that I had been expecting all my life. I had seen too many battles to be overcome with fear or excitement. My heart was still as I took my grizzly bear fur armor and draped it over my shoulders. The shale slabs that lined the inside stuck to my shoulders. The feeling was cool and reassuring. I grasped the worn handle of my club, whose name, strike only once, was more fearsome than the reality. I heard the footsteps of rousing warriors, they were well enough trained that they no longer needed my command to prepare for battle. Beaver by Julian Napoleon Spray paint on hide, 2013.
