My kokum
By Julian Napoleon
knew magic
Graphite on paper, Kokum, by Julian Napoleon, 2013.
My kokum knew magic
She could sit in one spot and fill a pail with tiny wild blueberries,
sew beautiful quilts from old scraps
Her dry meat was the thinnest
Her bannock the softest
She worked hard everyday of her life
cooking
cleaning
chopping wood
sewing moccasins
Holding a family together
She wouldn’t drink the tap water, or let you take her photo
She only cooked on the old woodstove and never spoke English
Hugs, kisses, floral print dresses
