Museum of Anthropology 2013 | Page 26

When I walk through the Museum and see strangers staring intently at pictures of my family and objects they have made, it makes me feel strange. Not necessarily bad, just strange. I want to yell at them and say, “That’s my grandpa!” or “That’s my auntie!” Not some relic of a lost civilization. I want to crush their edward s curtis spirits and destroy the illusions that these manufactured displays are a preservation of a long lost culture, or that this place will make them know native people. If you want to go to Haida Gwaii because you love all the art here you should know that I have never met anyone in Charlotte City who really gives two shits about Bill Reid. This museum is about anthropology, not native people. You can learn about a part of us but not all. by Kelsey Sparrow Digital media, Untitled, by Kelsey Sparrow, 2013. 24 25 mixed tribez mixed tribez
