Museek Mag We met her at Mumbai and this is what she had to say to us. Q. You are a singing wonder for the internet ear and got to make it big through your cover renditions on You Tube…Could you share your journey with us? I grew up in a suburb on the outskirts of Toronto where there is a huge Indian population and everybody knows what Bollywood is, whether Indian or not. I started uploading youtube videos, probably around 7 years ago but I was discovered in a youtube channel run by Akash Gandhi, who was a friend of mine. I really liked a lot of the cover tracks that he had been recording and uploading and we ended up collaborating on some tracks. He sent me a piano track and I really loved it and I was inspired. The day I got it, I mixed my voice and sent it back to him. He liked it and we uploaded it on youtube. We had an amazing response and that’s when we realized that there was a wide audience for this, people who wanted to hear our versions of existing songs. A lot of English artists were already into the cover culture, active on youtube. At that time there were hardly any Indians doing that and I think we were one of the first, making Indian covers, or Bollywood covers. So once we started getting a lot of good feedbacks for that, we moved on and then we did another cover and there is one song that we did for Vicky Donor, Pani da rang and the song was doing really well at that time. So when we released our version, it went viral and people in the industry also started re-tweeting it or watching it and we had people like Amitabh Bachchan who watched it and Ayushmaan Khurana the singer-composer who also appreciated it. Then the first cover video was Le hosla which was composed by Saleem Sulaiman and Saleem actually shared it. Once we started noticing that people in the industry were noticing us, we felt that the job was good. So that’s how everything started on youtube. CANDID 10
