Mr. Manoj runs a media institute called sound tech media and he is now the most in demand acoustic consultant in the city. He has designed a
good number of reputed studios in Chennai including Krimson Avenue and now A.R.Rahman’s YM Studio and A.R.Rahman’s Panchattan studios. We
met him at his state of the art recording studio in Chennai and this is what he has to share with us.
I've done my Audio Engineering from Government Film & Television Institute, Bangalore, and I've been working
in the audio industry as a sound engineer and as a studio designer for the past 24 years. I first started my
career as an Assistant Engineer in Studio Synthesis Delhi, in the year 1992.
I've had the opportunity to record some of the Hindustani Classical maestros Like Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Vilayat Khan, Ustad Bismillah Khan,
early in my career. Recorded Bands like Euphoria, Indian Ocean and singers like Shubha Mudgal, Hariharan, and Shankar Mahadevan and many
others. Also worked with Music composers like Shantanu Moitra and Ajay Atul.
Soundtech Media was started in the year 2005, with a mission to bring out passionate audio professionals in
field of audio. We have been able to produce some of the best talents in the industry. We understand that how
far one can go largely depends on how and where one begins! We provide real-time exposure to all our
students in audio engineering both in studio and live setup as much as possible. Soundtech Media courses
have been recognised by Bharathiar University, Coimbatore.
The very first project was a home studio for a musician friend of mine. Being an audio professional I was always interested in exploring the science
behind the acoustics. It was the appreciation from my clients which gave me the confidence to continue as an acoustician. I've done about 35
studios till now and some of them are for big time celebrities like singers and music directors.

It has always been a challenge for treating the home studios
acoustically because of factors like size and the budget. A simple
way of treating a room acoustically is by using mountable
absorption modules and diffusers and bass traps which are
available readymade. But they are definitely not cheaper. Best
method would be to identify the problem areas in room by acoustic
calculations and place required number of absorption and diffuser
modules in the right places. And for the soundproofing, choosing a
place which is away from the noisy surroundings will greatly
reduce the cost. It would be ideal to consult an acoustician who
can help in doing the acoustic calculations and suggest the best
method possible.
