How Science Contributed to Steroids
The changes within a male body during puberty were poorly understood, until the
19th century, when clinical experiments discovered the hormone inside the testes which
was the catalyst for these changes. Testosterone was discovered, isolated, and later
synthesized. The 1930’s synthesizing of testosterone led to the discovery of Anabolicandrogenic steroids. These steroids were actually developed only for medical purposes.
Its aim was to treat hypogonadism, a condition in which the testes do not produce enough
testosterone for normal growth, development, and sexual functioning. Its uses were to
cure delayed puberty, some types of impotence, and wasting of the body caused by HIV
infection or other diseases.
