learn that Nick first trained as
a barrister and worked in banking
in the City of London. He now
runs what is perhaps the most high
profile chain of personal training
clubs on the planet- Ultimate
Performance Fitness.
Having just set up shop in LA,
Nick took the time out to give Muscle
& Fitness readers some invaluable
business tips.
“I trained as a barrister, but my first
and most enduring love from 12 years
of age was bodybuilding,” says Nick.
“I learned my trade at Muscleworks
Gym in London and even competed in
the late 1990s, but didn’t actually work
in the fitness industry until 2007.

I literally woke up one morning
and knew that I could no longer
put on a suit every day.”
Nick founded Ultimate
Performance in 2009.
“I opened the first UP gym in London
in 2009,” he says. “I did it because
I wanted to create a business that
gave clients a genuine return on their
investment of both time and money.
I thought, and still do think, that the
quality of personal training in general
could be hugely improved across the
board. Quite frankly, a lot of personal
trainers are merely gym babysitters.
I wanted to offer something more-
something of quality.”
Nick analysed the industry
and left no stone unturned
when building his
business from scratch.
“I looked at the personal training
industry and thought it was a mess,”
