IFBB PRO MARIUS DOHNE TALKS ABOUT SHANTI MITCHELL As Shanti mentioned, he teamed up with Marius Dohne a few years ago. In this edition we talk to Marius about his coaching, (this can be found on page 38). We decided to contact Marius and gain some insight from this coach about his SA champion client. “HIS SMALL WAIST, HUGE LEGS AND WIDE SHOULDERS MAKE FOR THE PERFECT BODYBUILDING PHYSIQUE.” M.E: When did you meet Shanti? Marius: I saw Shanti for the first time at the 2007 Mr Universe. He was in the line up next to me. I won that line up and the overalls, but I was keeping my eye on Shanti more than any other athlete because in my opinion he was my biggest threat. M.E: How long have you been working with him? Marius: We have been working together for three years now. Our first year together he placed 6th at the IFBB SAs, the second year he placed 3rd at the IFBB SAs and finally this year he won the IFBB SA title and took overalls as well. M.E: Describe the type of bodybuilder you found? Marius: Shanti was one of the most symmetrical and perfectly formed bodybuilders I saw in a very long time. He just struggled getting into condition. M.E: What was he doing wrong? Marius: He was permanently on a ketogenic diet, and it didn't work too well with his physique. M.E: How have you changed him? Marius: I added more carbs in order to speed up his metabolism. I also changed his training focusing more on his weak points. M.E: What was he eating before, and how have you changed his diet? Marius: He ate mostly protein and some fats, if I remember correctly. I changed his macronutrient ratios so that he ate more carbs and less protein. M.E: How was he training before and how have you changed his training? Marius: We all train a certain way, and that way sculpt our physiques over the years. I like to take athletes out of that comfort zone and focus more on their weak areas and that's exactly what I did with Shanti. M.E: Tell us what you think about his genetics and where his potential lies? Marius: Shanti has the prettiest physique in SA bodybuilding. His small waist, huge legs and wide shoulders make for the perfect bodybuilding physique. But he will need to thicken his hamstrings and back to be competitive as an IFBB Pro one day. Once he's done that, I think he will be a successful IFBB Pro. M.E: What other areas do you want to work on to take the best amateur bodybuilder in SA to the next level? Marius: Hamstrings and back. He needs fuller hanging hamstrings from the sides and he needs a thicker back and lower lats. Once he's got that he's going to be even harder to beat. www.muscleevolution.co.za 33
