ans brought down the house – in this case
an opera house – at one of the largest
independent shows on the calendar, the
Rossi Grand Prix. The vocal appreciation
fans had for their favourite athletes was
befitting of the level of talent on show at an
event that can only be aptly described as an
extravaganza of fitness, body transformation
and bodybuilding.
With a record number of over 320 entrants
descending on the Pretoria State Theatre on the
weekend of 23 May the show was bound to be a
humdinger from the start. All eyes scanned the
line of oil-covered men and women on stage to
see who would set themselves apart from their
rivals to bag gold.
The extravaganza ran smoothly with regular
30-minute breaks between the marathon
divisions. This gave spectators ample time

to browse the extensive fitness and nutrition
exhibition outside the theatre while they waited
for their favourite athlete to step on stage. This also
gave fans the opportunity to mingle with athletes
and ask for autographs or get those sought-after
selfies for their next social media update.
Taking top honours on the night was the
shapely Bianca van Rensburg (our Muscle
Evolution Babe in this issue – see page 62) who
claimed the Overall Bikini title having won the
Miss Toned Bikini under 1.65m division, while
veteran John Charles strutted his stuff with
confidence to take the Overall Men’s title on
the evening.
Damien du Plessis won the Mr Front Cover
Model title, edging out Wayne Young, who placed
second, and Duan van der Berg in third in what
was a highly competitive category.
