Now the comparison done here is not just a statistical analysis but more of an overall view, aided
by that of the statistics shown above. You will find more practical opinions based on my own
views which I hope will strengthen the remark that I am going to make.
First things first, Welbeck seems to have played almost 300 more minutes than Chicharito, and
although 2/3rds of his playing time has been on the left wing i.e. not his preferred position, the
comparison will always be brought down to a per game or per minute basis, whichever is rquired,
so that a fair comparison can be made.
Goals Scored
Welbeck has scored one goal every 146 minutes this season, which is a vast improvement from
last season where he scored 2 goals in the whole season, which is 1 every 750 minutes. On the
other hand, Chicharito’s ratio was brilliant last season. Despite being limited to mainly substitute
appearances, he scored a goal every 87 minutes. However, this season has been a bit shaky. His
winner against Stoke remains his only strike in around 450 minutes of gameplay.
In terms of impact of goals scored, Welbeck scored a vital header against Madrid and a possible
decider against Stoke last season. This season he has had a winner against Shakhtar and the brace
against Villa was more important than the brace he scored against Swansea. Hernandez, in this
case, trumps Welbeck in every aspect. He scored winners against Braga, Chelsea and Newcastle
and put in another match winning performance against Aston Villa. His solitary strike this
season was also a match winning one against Stoke.
