PURE PERFORMANCE | SWIM A 'cation with a cause While Ocean Swim Fiji is about enjoying sport and relaxation with fellow swimmers, it also strives to make a positive and lasting impact on the Fijian community. At the heart of the event is an effort to benefit the lives of Fijian youth, with Cure Kids Fiji as the official charity partner of Ocean Swim Fiji. Cure Kids Fiji works to improve the health of the children in Fiji through research and evidence-based child health programmes. Working together, Ocean Swim Fiji and Cure Kids Fiji plan to make a difference in the lives and health of Fijian youth. Scott Rice said learning of the impact of unnecessary drownings amongst Fiji’s young people was a trigger for the partnership. “I was shocked to learn that drowning is one of Fiji’s leading causes of death, especially for young people aged 1 to 29 years as low- income island nations are at particularly high risk. In 2018, Ocean Swim Fiji will be donating a minimum of FJD$10,000 to Cure Kids Fiji to assist efforts to reduce this worrying drowning toll.” Additionally, Ocean Swim Fiji will hold a special clinic for young Fijian swimmers at Natadola Beach on the Coral Coast to teach them about beach safety and ocean swimming. 80 young swimmers will get tips from open water swimming specialists Andrew ‘Reidy’ Reid, Dan Abel, and Andre Slade as well as receiving donated swim gear from Ocean Swim Fiji participants.
