FEATURE STORY THE SANDY POINT HALF MARATHON BY SOPHIE POWERLETT T he Sandy Point Half Marathon gives Victorian runners the opportunity to take control of their winter training and stay dedicated to their workouts come rain, hail or ice. Held on the last day of winter, Sunday 27 August in the scenic Bayside suburb of Brighton, the event gives participants the perfect opportunity to register early and commit to their winter running goals – and become a Winter Warrior. All participants are invited to stay in the event village after their run to receive their special “Warrior Medal”, enjoy refreshments and tasty food to celebrate the end of the season with their new friends, and another goal ticked off their list. The event offers four distances: Half-marathon, 10km, 5km and 3km kids' run – with participants enjoying the scenic course along Beach Road, running towards Sandringham before returning to Brighton. Our top tips for winter training: • Stay healthy, it doesn’t do any good to train too hard and become sick, injured or exhausted • Start fuelling the body now with a focus on small, nutritious meals 5-6 times a day, no skimping on the complex carbohydrates or calcium rich food, and increase hydration • Spend time visualising running the perfect race, there’s a reason elite athletes do this and that’s because mental preparation works beginners the chance to proudly fundraise for the charity of their choice – giving them a reason to run and motivating them throughout their training. Over a three-year period the Sandy Point Half Marathon has raised a total of $39,182 for 24 different charities. “Nothing compares to running in your home town. Whether you’re a regular runner or a first timer, you’ll feel the energy of local residents and fellow runners cheering you on,” says Sandy Half Marathon Ambassador and local resident, Amanda Moore. “The event is about community and having some fun on the course.
