THE SANDY POINT
HALF MARATHON
BY SOPHIE POWERLETT
T
he Sandy Point Half Marathon gives Victorian runners the
opportunity to take control of their winter training and
stay dedicated to their workouts come rain, hail or ice.
Held on the last day of winter, Sunday 27 August in the
scenic Bayside suburb of Brighton, the event gives participants the
perfect opportunity to register early and commit to their winter
running goals – and become a Winter Warrior.
All participants are invited to stay in the event village after their
run to receive their special “Warrior Medal”, enjoy refreshments
and tasty food to celebrate the end of the season with their new
friends, and another goal ticked off their list. The event offers four
distances: Half-marathon, 10km, 5km and 3km kids' run – with
participants enjoying the scenic course along Beach Road, running
towards Sandringham before returning to Brighton.
Our top tips for winter training:
• Stay healthy, it doesn’t do any good to train too hard and become
sick, injured or exhausted
• Start fuelling the body now with a focus on small, nutritious
meals 5-6 times a day, no skimping on the complex
carbohydrates or calcium rich food, and increase hydration
• Spend time visualising running the perfect race, there’s a reason
elite athletes do this and that’s because mental
preparation works
beginners the chance to proudly fundraise for the charity of
their choice – giving them a reason to run and motivating them
throughout their training. Over a three-year period the Sandy
Point Half Marathon has raised a total of $39,182 for 24
different charities.
“Nothing compares to running in your home town. Whether
you’re a regular runner or a first timer, you’ll feel the energy of local
residents and fellow runners cheering you on,” says Sandy Half
Marathon Ambassador and local resident, Amanda Moore. “The
event is about community and having some fun on the course. It’s
the perfect event to grab a mate and start running together
this winter.”
