THE ARTIST
Monica received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education K-12 and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2001. While pursuing her undergraduate degrees, she worked as the studio assistant for glass artist Ellie Burke. Since graduation she has taught high school Art Metals,
Photography, Ceramics, and Fiber Arts, but she prefers the earthy,
malleable medium of clay for her own artwork. Monica currently teaches art during the summer months at French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts in Hancock, New York, where she has worked since 2004. Ceramics and Glass Casting are two of the classes she has taught there. She lives in rural Northeast Wisconsin during the remainder of the year.
THE ARTWORK
From the Artist:
My current sculptural work is made by extruding clay through aluminum dies that I design and make myself. I then cut pieces from the clay extrusions and assemble them to form one-of-a-kind sculpture. The sculptures are made out of stoneware clay that is Raku fired, which yields a smoky, metallic surface. Some of the sculptures have elements made of cast glass, which I kiln-fire in handmade molds of investment plaster.
