THE PROTECTOR

By Grace Elston

Bones, it is heartbreaking.

Why? Why can’t you change?

I know you’re scared.

It’s inside you. It’s in there, you just…

Open yourself!

Why is it not okay?

How can you continue this life if

You don’t trust yourself?

The one – the only one who

Truly connects to your soul.

I see her.

She refuses to let herself feel.

This time is the last –

I have to move on.

Her selfishness causes insufferable torment;

She will not love. And she will not

Let me go. Please let me go!

She says I need you here.

I look, searching, for something…

A glimmer, a hope, a life.

I can’t.

I can’t be your protector.
