Director's Message The summer season provided Utahns with many opportunities to experience the state’s rich cultural diversity. From the Philippines Independence Day Celebration in June to Fiesta Mexicana in September, I extend congratulations on the success of these events and thank these communities for sharing their cultural heritage with food, music, dance and art. Community outreach remains a top priority for me. I recently attended the NAACP, Organization of Chinese Americans, and U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce national conventions and had the opportunity to become acquainted with community advocates on both a local and national level. The focus on youth is a common goal for these organizations and the leadership programs they have implemented are making the difference for many students as they plan their futures. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is engaging Utah’s youth through the Multicultural Youth Leadership Summit. In two years, attendance has increased from 500 to 1,500 students. On behalf of the MCA Team, I thank the educators and school districts for their support, in realizing the significance of the Summit’s message, and in encouraging their students to attend. This year’s Summit speakers include: Governor Gary R. Herbert, Lt. Governor Spencer J. Cox, keynote speaker Nicholas Carlisle, whose work focuses on eliminating bullying in schools, and CoolSpeak team presenters Ernesto Mejia and Carlos Ojeda, Jr., the rock stars of previous Summits who join us again to provide a powerful example of youth advocacy. This is an exciting time for Multicultural Affairs. As you read through this quarter’s magazine, I hope the stories resonate with you on a personal level. Claudia H.
