“ Stopover ” in a connecting city
If your international flight connects in an interesting city , why not leave the airport and spend a few days there ? Not only will you reach your final destination feeling refreshed and ready to explore , you ’ ll also expand the scope of your discoveries .
A Note from Harriet : O . A . T . can arrange this option ( with included hotel and airport transfers ) on select adventures to Asia , Africa , and the South Pacific that connect in cities like Hong Kong , Dubai , Auckland , or Amsterdam .
IN-FLIGHT ALL STARS
Ideally , your carry-on baggage serves two purposes : 1 ) keeping you clean and clothed in case your main luggage doesn ’ t arrive with you , and 2 ) making sure you have everything you need for a comfortable flight . Here ’ s what we keep close at hand after takeoff .
A good book : Even if you load up your e-reader , at least one real book safeguards against technical difficulties — and can be swapped with fellow travelers once you ’ ve finished it .
Neck pillow : Whether you prefer to sleep on your side , lean on the window , or rest on your tray table , there ’ s an option that ’ s right for you .
Ear plugs and / or noise-canceling headphones : Consider both , because sleeping with headphones can be difficult .
Collapsible water bottle : Help save the environment , space in your luggage , and the hefty cost of airport water .
Pen : Don ’ t be that person scrambling when the arrival / customs forms come around .
Compression socks : Safeguard against DVT and decrease swelling .
The cleanup crew : Keep a toothbrush / toothpaste , refresher wipes , and lip balm in the seat pocket or under your seat for a quick refresh before landing .
